Young Women Are the Most Bored at Work. Heres What We Can Do About it (Part 2) - Hallie Crawford

Young Women Are the Most Bored at Work. Here’s What We Can Do About it (Part 2) Hallie was honored to be featured in a recent Glamour.com article about how to avoid being bored at work. As a follow up to this article, we wanted to share some additional tips with you. Many women feel bored at work, and there could be several reasons for this. Their job may not be meeting their career values and therefore theyre not motivated inherently by their work. Others may not feel like theyre making a difference- or the difference they want to be making. Others may not be fully aware of the skills they want to use and develop, and their jobs are not leveraging those skills so they dont feel they are growing professionally. Sometimes women, more than men, dont know what their career goals are or lack career direction because in some cases they may not have been encouraged early on to consider what they wanted to do professionally, so they may not be in the right career fit, or bored because they lack focus and an agenda for what they want to achieve. Here are three things you can do to avoid feeling bored at work: 1. Identify your values. When women identify and align their career with their career values, they will have more career direction, a better sense of their identity professionally, and understand what their career goals need to be. Having a job aligned with your values gives you a sense of reward and fulfillment that goes beyond any day to day frustrations or boredom you might have at work. 2. Get inspired by others creativity. Look at posts from other women who inspire you, whether this be a life story or a DIY project on Pinterest to get new creative ideas on how to approach your tasks at work. Identify women you admire whose qualities you want to adopt or emulate, and whose career gives you a sense of what youd like to aspire to. 3. Spend time with positive colleagues. Spend more time with people at work you admire, who are doing new things, are creative and inspiring. Use your time with them to come up with new ways to approach your tasks at work. Take time each week to have lunch with a friend outside of work as well. Make sure you have a blend of time inside and outside the office to mix things up, beat boredom, and come back to the office re-energized. Finally, find another job. If you find that your job doesnt fulfill any of your work values and nothing takes away your boredom after 4-6 months, it may be time to find another job.

How to Include a Writing Sample With Your Resume

How to Include a Writing Sample With Your ResumeWriting samples are becoming increasingly popular for those seeking to include a writing sample with their resume. While writing samples can provide information about a writer's particular skill set, it is also important to include an area of your own expertise. You might have discovered that the writing samples that you are looking at will be quite long and tedious to read. Or perhaps you have been in correspondence with someone who told you how much he or she enjoys the information contained in the sample but needs a bit more time to process it. Finding time to read and process the writing sample will ensure that you get the most from it.One of the most efficient ways to include a writing sample with your resume is to provide some brief insight into the nature of your expertise. If you are a writer, you may want to provide an overview of your publications and/or your resume. If you are a writer and wish to include a sample with your re sume, you should be able to quickly tell from the sample what aspects of your expertise will be useful to the hiring company. If you are a writer and you wish to include a sample with your resume, then you should give a list of the projects that you have authored or have co-authored. For example, if you have written numerous blog posts, provide the name of each one. Include the date of each blog post, the title, and any links that are provided. If you have authored articles, provide a link to the full text of the article and where you have published it.If you are a writer, you should also include the name of the publisher of each writing sample. If you are a novelist, try to provide a link to the place where the novel is sold. For fiction writers, having the opportunity to sell the novel prior to publication will give the prospective employer the opportunity to receive the most from the writer. If you are a writer, you should also provide the title of the publishing company as well as the page number from which the book or the website was purchased. If you are not a writer, you can also include an excerpt from a book, a website, or a short article. When compiling a list of sample materials, it will be helpful to know that even though you are not a writer, you can still provide a sample of your writing talent. By including a writing sample with your resume, you will be able to demonstrate to the hiring manager that you have the ability to produce original content.

Millennials Still Asking Parents for Help With Rent

Millennials Still Asking Parents for Help With Rent According to a new analysis done for the New York Times, 40% of people in their early 20s get financial help from their parents to cover living expenses like rentâ€"and the average payout is around $3,000 per year. Some millennials are more likely to get help than others: 53% of young people who studied art and design reportedly receive financial assistance from their parents, to the tune of $3,600 a year, on average. By contrast, 30% of millennials in the military or blue-collar job fields have been getting help with the rent from their parents, and they receive $1,400 per year. The data comes from interviews with young people from 2007 to 2013 for the Transition into Adulthood Study, which is conducted by researchers at the Institute of Social Research at the University of Michigan. In our previous coverage of the issue, we found that 30% of parents offering financial support for their adult children fork over at least $5,000 a year. What’s more, unsurprisingly, parents think kids should be out on their own sooner: In a survey commissioned by MONEY, parents said that adult children should be financially independent by age 25. The adult children, on the other hand, want a couple extra years, and say that 27 is the right age for fully supporting oneself.

4 Problems With the Goals Youre Setting

4 Problems With the Goals Youre SettingWe all set goals. Some are big and juicy and inspiring. (I want to be an astronaut when I grow up) Others are more mundane. (I want to floss) But regardless of the size and scope, our goals will never be anything more than a source of guilt if we cant make them happen. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Whether youre dreaming big or just trying to make steady progress, if you dont set the right goals youll never get to the place you want to be. In order to do this, sometimes you have to admit that what youre doing isnt working and tackle the source of the issue. That being said, here are 4 problems with the goals youre setting1. Your motivation sucksDont just set a goal because you think it makes you look good on social media or because youre trying to impress someone. Set goals that are meaningful to you and achievable with the right balance of sacrifice so you make sure to complete them.We all want t o be cool, and we all struggle with wanting to do things we binnensee other people do. But goals ought to be personal. Make sure you know why youre doing what youre doing and it will make your goal that much easier to achieve.2. Youre all talk and no actionIt doesnt matter how good your goals look on paper if you never manage to reachthem. Dont be one of those people who declares your intention and then doesnt follow through. Nothing is more annoying or transparent. Everyone can tell if youd rather get the credit than actually do the work. Set your goal, take steps to complete it, and then dont solicit too much praise.3. You quit too oftenIf youve set your goals correctlyand you have the passion to perseverethen you should have a pretty clear idea what your goal is going to require. Youre prepared to struggle and to stare down doubt. Youve seen the hard parts coming. Part of this means setting goals that matter to you enough to keep up your devotion to them when the going gets tough est.4. Youre intimidatedMaybe your goals arent grand enough. Are you too scared to try for what you really want? Does fear of failure (or success) hold you back from what you truly want to do? If so, take a lesson from the fruchtwein fearless entrepreneurs and set off boldly into the unknown. Dont let yourself get caught up in the what-ifs. Steer into the dizzying direction of your wildest dreams. Do what scares you mostits often exactly what you should be doing.

How to Get Your Resume Ready For a Job Search

How to Get Yur Resume Ready For a Job Search How to get your resume ready for a job searchYouve decided to start your job search, but youve already reached a roadblock getting your resume ready. On the job hunt, your resume is your number one ammo, says Monster career expert Vicki Salemi, who spent mora than 15 years in corporate recruiting. When done right, your resume can open the door to your dream job, she bedrngnises. With stakes that high, its no wonder that a resume refresh also commonly fills people with existential angst. We get itcondensing your entire work history into a perfectly-worded typo-free single-page document that could potentially determine your entire career future is maybe just a little stressful. But what if we told you it doesnt have to be as daunting as you think? Monster has all kinds of resources to help make the whole process easier. Like you-dont-have-to-even-lift-a-finger-if-you-dont-want-to easier. Skip ahead to step sixif this sounds like you. But if you re mora of the DIY type, followthe seven steps to a perfect resume below. Youll be on the interview circuit in no time.1. Start with the right parametersResumes are not one-size-fits-all. The format you should use and the information you should highlight depends upon your field, for starters. So youll want to structure your resume to fit the industry standard for the job youre applying to. A quick way to start figuring this out? Check out Monsters resume templates by industry.Your experience also plays a part in structure. The answer to the age-old question of how long should my resume be? is that it depends upon how much time youve got under your belt. As a general rule of thumb, job binnenseekers with under three years of experience should aim for one page, but those with more years in the field could go up to two.Keep in mind that a recruiter doesnt have time to sift through the next great American novel. Back in her recruiting days, Salemi says she usually spent no more than thr ee seconds on a resume. Being succinct is key, Salemi says. Recruiters will lose focus and attention if you personenname every single responsibility youve ever had.Lastly, theres the question of chronological (jobs listed in order by date) or functional (jobs listed by relevance). We answer that question in the article Should you use a chronological or functional resume? but the gist is that functional typically makes sense unless youre a job changer, are just starting out or have gaps in your work history. Otherwise, go chrono.2. Get the basics rightNo matter the job or industry youre in, there are a few must-haves for every resume. They are work experience, job titles, responsibilities, and years worked in each position, Salemi says. Its important to show prospective employers a timeline, she says. Even if you use a functional resumeas opposed to a chronological resumeyou should still include years.Oh, and dont forget your contact info Believe it or not, Salemi says she has receive d resumes that include no way of contacting the candidate. (We think its safe to assume those were the people who didnt get called in for interviews.) While you dont need to include your home addressSalemi says recruiters may start making assumptions that the commute could be too long for youyou absolutely must include your phone number and email address.3. Use keywords to help you break through When recruiters post jobs, Salemi says, they typically dont read every resume that comes intheyll often start by having their applicant tracking system (a fancy name for recruiting software) filter out resumes based on keywords. Those keywords are terms or phrases the hiring manager has deemed to be valuable to the job.So youll want to pack your resume with keywords but you also need to be careful not to gooverboard, since a human will hopefully read your resume eventually. Thus, sprinkle those keywords throughout and provide a little bit of context with each. For example, a social media savv y job seeker might include the names of key platforms with some explanation such as,Leveraged Instagram to showcase happy customers, increasing followers by 10,000.Need help coming up with keywords? Take words and phrases directly from the job descriptionmirroring the ad in order of mention as the hiring manager will typically put the most coveted skill sets at the top, says Salemi. Watch the video below to learn more about using keywords on your resume..embed-container position relative padding-bottom 56.25% height 0 overflow hidden max-width 100% .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed position absolute top 0 left 0 width 100% height 100% 4. ersatzdarsteller up on numbers to up your oddsGetting past the applicant tracking system is like making it past the semifinalsbut your resume still has more hurdles to pass, in the form of those human recruiters who are trying to pick out the best of the best to bring in for interviews. Youll want to make su re you quantify your achievements to help them see the impact you made. If you had a choice between a candidate who developed sales leads and one who developed 20 new sales leads a week, wouldnt you pick the latter?Quantifying helps recruiters put a framework around the work you do and how you do it, Salemi says. Do you manage a team and how many? Did you save the company money and how much? Indicating daily, weekly, monthly meetings and deliverables attests to your ability to multitask and get the job done.Anything related to time, money or people offers a key opportunity to quantify.Watch the video below about quantifiable achievements to learn more about how to use numbers to make your resume seem more impressive..embed-container position relative padding-bottom 56.25% height 0 overflow hidden max-width 100% .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed position absolute top 0 left 0 width 100% height 100% 5. Make sure youre not a fashion faux pasJus t like you wouldnt show up to a job interview wearing jeggings or a suit with super-wide lapels, you dont want your resume to appear inappropriate or out-of-date.So delete that opening objective sectionand replace with a summary, which is now preferred. Cut that references available upon request clich (duh, of course they are) at the bottom. And while youre hitting the delete button, Salemi says to expunge basic computer skills like Microsoft Word and only include specific skills to your industry, like C++ programming. Youll also want to switch out that crazy font you think will help your resume stand out. (See Monsters picks for best resume fonts.)And check out this list of other missteps that make your resume look like a dinosaur. Its not all about taking out the trash. You can make yourself seem a little less square if you add in some hyperlinks, your social media handles (if SFW), and a splash of color.6. Bring in a wingman (or woman) to review your workIf youve gotten this far i n your resume makeover, its time to give your eyes a break. Youve probably spent way too much time staring at the document on your screen checking for misspelled words and other typos that it no longer even reads like English to you anymore.
